A little etiquette goes a long way

Riding is a fun sport; however safety is very important, so think logically.

Pay attention to the arena rules. Keep arena gates shut just in case you fall off and have to catch your horse. When in an arena, try to ride the same way as others are going. Pass left shoulder to left shoulder, and when you're riding in Europe, pass right shoulder to right. Slower horses are on the inside and faster horses are on the outside, just like driving on the freeway. If you are totally confused or it looks like others riders are "deurmekaar" meaning they are misguided, uninformed and generally don't have a clue what's going on, then voice your intentions (i.e. "on the outside" or "entering arena" etc.).

Try to be vigilant and see who is around you and what they are doing. I wouldn't lunge a horse in a busy arena or get too close to one that is on the lunge line. Always try to keep a horse length between you and the next rider, do not crowd other riders as horses can kick out and bite.

Forget your smokes at the barn, a simple no-no in all its forms.

Ride with friend for safety. Don't ride in the dark or in stormy weather! Alright, alright, let's go ride!
