Getting started with the basics - Part 3
When leading your horse, let him walk beside you, not behind or in front of you. Do not loop the leadrope around your hands or arm. When turning him out in the paddock, keep his head and attention towards you. Do not stand directly in front of him, you can get run over! Manners do maketh man and horse. There is nothing like a well mannered human being and well mannered horse.
In starting your first ride, feel comfortable and make sure you have on the correct gear (riding boots and helmet). Inspect your tack for tears or weak points - look at the reins, stirrup leathers, girth and billets - you need to get familiar with these terms and ask your instructor what they are.
Get help from your trainer so you can learn to saddle up properly and also ask your trainer to show you how to fit your tack well and neatly; it's wise to get into the habit of looking good, neat and tidy around and on your horse from the very beginning. This will serve you well later.
Make sure you are getting on a horse suitable for your experience level and remember don't be pushed beyond your comfort zone. Your first ride needs to be a positive and fun experience!
