More walking
When you start walking, it will feel like a swaying kind of motion from side to side -this is because the gait is a four-step gait, in other words the horse moves each leg in turn and places each foot on the ground individually. The horse also moves his head backwards and forwards almost as if he is nodding, so you need to keep your hands relaxed so that you can stay in movement with the horse's head action.
Do not restrict the natural movement of the horse. You're now getting to learn the word ‘contact' which you will hear a lot (contact is the connection that you have between the horse's month and your hands).
Knowing how to stop a horse is a good thing. Basically you would pull the reins gently and use your voice saying ‘Whoa'. Your contact then becomes a little stronger. Turning your horse to the left is done by opening your left reign and looking left and the same for the right. Try to get the steering process down as quickly as possible; you will use it every time you ride. You may feel intimated for the first time, it can be overwhelming, just hang in there - everything takes a little time to learn.
